This is how you know it's not going to be a good day. There are 16 televisions and two large projection screens at the front of the press box (the place is used for simulcasting the rest of the year), and one TV in each bank of four has been tuned to the local weather since 9 this morning.
The main track is a soupy mess. In the Grade III Alysheba, today's eighth race, Chelokee suffered a right front condylar fracture and was vanned off the track and to the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, 75 miles away.
The injury is not unlike that suffered by Barbaro in the 2006 Preakness, which ultimately cost him his life. Matz trained both horses.
Noted equine vet Dr. Larry Bramlage, who treated Barbaro, was also on the scene today. "It's amazingly very similar to what Barbaro had, only in another leg," he said.
The local weather calls for more showers tonight, another threat for severe weather late tonight and a stormy Derby morning. Naturally, that begs the question: Which Derby horses have won on an off-track?
Cool Coal Man has. So has Z Fortune, Visionaire and Denis of Cork. Smooth Air, who has never raced outside of Florida, is 2-for-2 in the slop.
Here are the current Derby odds, as of 5:10 p.m.:
