Travers Eve
Friday, August 22, 2008

Is it just me, or does anyone else have a hard time believing that the Travers is tomorrow? Time has flown during this Saratoga meet faster than any of the previous 19 I've covered.

That said, it should be a very interesting race. While lacking in individual star power, its collective appeal cannot be denied. Eight graded stakes winners. The Belmont winner. The Jim Dandy winner. A Canadian classic winner.

The Chief.

In keeping with the tradition we started at the Kentucky Derby, here are the early Travers odds as of the close of racing today at Saratoga, with morning-line odds in parenthesis. Keep in mind, this is with just $2,282 in the win pool from advance wagering on track and at Belmont Park.

1. Tale of Ekati 7-1 (20-1)
2. Colonel John 5-2 (8-1)
3. Da' Tara 8-1 (8-1)
4. Tizbig 13-1 (30-1)
5. Macho Again 7-2 (6-1)
6. Cool Coal Man 14-1 (15-1)
7. Amped 27-1 (30-1)
8. Harlem Rocker 18-1 (4-1)
9. Mambo in Seattle 13-1 (5-1)
10. Tres Borrachos 25-1 (15-1)
11. Pyro 8-1 (7-2)
12. Court Vision 31-1 (12-1)

The weather is supposed to be spectacular on Saturday, and the racing should be as well. One horse I'll be watching with interest on the undercard is Indyanne, the unbeaten speedball filly who headlines the Grade 3 Victory Ride. Don't blink, you might miss her.

As for the Travers, I can't say with any real conviction who I like, but I can say with absolute certainty who I'm rooting for (figuratively, of course): trainer Allen Jerkens, The Chief, the 79-year-old living legend who will be in just his fifth Travers. Tizbig, who ran six days ago, may be up the track, or he may win. Either way, having Mr. Jerkens in the race makes it a true Grade 1.

Get here early, bring the cooler and save me a cold one. It should be a great day.
