Life was anything but easy growing up on Cutler Street during the early 1940s. At the time, the bustling street in Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant neighborhood was crowded with low-income and immigrant families. Poverty was common, and there was seldom time to do anything but work.

'101 Things to Do' in the region, plus three more
Wednesday, June 24, 2009

About a week and a half ago I found a special insert in The Gazette, "101 Things To Do In and Around the Capital District." You can read it by clicking HERE.

I read the insert before anything else in the paper that day, ignoring my normal routine of the front page, then editorials, then Life and Arts and finally the comics.

I thought the list was thorough and I got some great ideas for things to do this summer. I’m especially looking forward to going to Fields Sculpture Park at Omi International Art Center that Sara Foss recommended.

I enjoyed reading the list so much I planned to write my own addition to it, and then promptly forgot to do it. Until today, when I found the insert lying around in my room.

So here are 3 more things to do in and around the Capital Region.

My best friend and I made a trip down to the Central Park Rose Garden a few weeks ago. It was absolutely gorgeous. I was amazed by all the different variations of roses. The garden is in stellar condition and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Kudos to all those who work to keep it beautiful.
While I’m on the topic of Schenectady’s crown jewel, I should mention the paddle boats. They’re reasonably priced and a lot of fun on a nice afternoon. My cousins and I used to love to go around the fountain in hopes of getting splashed.

As for not-so-nice days, Proctors shows movies daily from now until early July. The selection includes "Adventureland," "Shrek the Third," and "The Brothers Bloom," among others. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for anyone under 17. You can get the full schedule by clicking HERE.

Like I said before, the insert was thorough. So I’m having trouble coming up with any more additions. I think the Water Ski Show at Jumpin’ Jacks (and the delicious food there) deserve a second mention. The Water Ski show is campy, but fun and unique to the Capital District. The Valley Cats too merit an additional shout out. Thursday is opening night at The Joe due to the massive amount of rain we’ve received lately. Games there are always fun (you might remember I partook in a competitive eating contest at one last summer) and this Thursday there’s fireworks too.

Have something fun to do in and around the Capital District? Leave a comment.
