There’s a game that makes the rounds through the emo pre-teen blogosphere. It’s called the “Soundtrack of My Life.” The basic idea is to pretend your life is the subject of an epic teen coming of age movie and to choose the songs that best represent various parts of your life.
The subjects are:
Opening Credits
Waking Up
Falling in Love
Fight scene
Breaking up
Getting back together
Secret Love
Life's okay
Mental breakdown
Driving Flashback
Partying
Happy dance
Regretting
Long night alone
Death Scene
Closing Credits
I try to this once a year. It’s been interesting to see how my song choices have evolved over the years. I wrote over the summer about how I considered myself a misunderstood “punk rock princess” years ago. Back then my song choices consisted largely of Something Corporate, Dashboard Confessional and Fallout Boy. Gradually my tastes progressed to include tons of '60s music. I used the Beatle’s “Dear Prudence” as my waking up song, “I’m Into Something Good” by Herman’s Hermits as my happy dance song.
Some songs remain stagnant. “I’m Into Something Good” is still my happy dance song. For a few years now, whenever I’m feeling particularly happy with my life I put on that song I and do a silly little jig.
The one song that has always been on my list is Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl.” It doesn’t matter when I do it, that song will always be the closing credits to the soundtrack of my life.

P.S I want to wish my dad (a religious reader of this blog) a very happy birthday!
