The best show you're NOT watching
Friday, November 21, 2008

The best show you're not watching is a phrase critics throw around a lot, especially lately when talking about "30 Rock".

I do like "30 Rock", Tina Fey is hysterical. But I’ve got to say the best show you’re not watching is NBC’s "Chuck". "Chuck" has all the best elements of a TV show. It has action and adventure, romance and, best of all, nerd jokes.

If you’ve never heard of it, "Chuck" is the story of its title character. He’s an average compute geek, a member of the Nerd Herd (like the Geek Squad in real life) until one day he accidentally downloads a file of government security secrets into his brain. After that fateful day, Chuck can “flash” on people or objects, looking at them and instantly connecting their image with some sort of top secret security threat.

Chuck is then given two protectors, the NSA’s John Casey and the CIA’s Sarah Walker, who becomes Chuck’s love interest. The story follows the three as they try to save the world and hide Chuck’s secret ability as Chuck vies for Sarah’s attention.

It’s a quirky show and takes some getting used to, but the best shows do. My dad used to only be able to watch "The Office" for five-minute intervals because “it reminded him of the idiots he’s worked for.” But "The Office" is a brilliant show, and so is "Chuck".

My brother and I started watching it as a joke last year, and now we can’t get enough. We have to call each other after watching it because no one else watches. You can fix that. It’s on Monday nights at 8 or you can watch it online anytime at nbc.com anytime. In fact, the entire second season (up until this point) is online right now. Stop reading and go watch it!

In other TV news, Steven Colbert is hosting a Christmas special Sunday night at 10. It’s a takeoff on Christmas variety shows and features him singing with Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello and, of course, Jon Stewart.
