Today’s post marks the first in a two-part series featured this week. I know it’s early in the week, but sometimes it’s nice to have something to look forward to.
Friday night marks the one-year anniversary of Art Night Schenectady. For those of you unfamiliar with it, Art Night is held the third Friday of the month in downtown Schenectady from 5 to 9 p.m. There’s no admission charge, although individual stores and restaurants obviously sell things.
According to its Web site, www.artnightschenectady.com, its mission is to “promote interest in the arts by making it accessible, thereby strengthening the arts and business communities in Schenectady.”
Each Art Night is marked with special events at many of the local stores downtown. This week, at Jay Street Studios Tedsilk, a local band, is performing improvised music. 440, “working” gallery, Ambitions, and The Katbird Shop are all displaying the works of various local artists. Chez Daisie and the Open Door also have special discounts running.
My mom and I have gone a couple of times over the past year. Each time, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The art is always fun to admire, the music is fantastic and it’s great to see downtown bustling.
My favorite Art Night last year was the night they projected “It’s a Wonderful Life” outside of Proctors the week before Christmas. It was freezing, but still loads of fun.
But so far the weather forecast for Friday evening is beautiful, 60 degrees and sunny. If I could have a wonderful time while it was 20 degrees and snowing, you’ll be fine. So go check it out. You might find a new monthly tradition.
Later in the week, I’ll be writing about an art exhibit, “Genuine Men” is also opening on Friday. Check back in a few days for details.
