What you can do on Friday night (part I)
Monday, May 12, 2008

Today’s post marks the first in a two-part series featured this week. I know it’s early in the week, but sometimes it’s nice to have something to look forward to.

Friday night marks the one-year anniversary of Art Night Schenectady. For those of you unfamiliar with it, Art Night is held the third Friday of the month in downtown Schenectady from 5 to 9 p.m. There’s no admission charge, although individual stores and restaurants obviously sell things.

According to its Web site, www.artnightschenectady.com, its mission is to “promote interest in the arts by making it accessible, thereby strengthening the arts and business communities in Schenectady.”

Each Art Night is marked with special events at many of the local stores downtown. This week, at Jay Street Studios Tedsilk, a local band, is performing improvised music. 440, “working” gallery, Ambitions, and The Katbird Shop are all displaying the works of various local artists. Chez Daisie and the Open Door also have special discounts running.

My mom and I have gone a couple of times over the past year. Each time, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The art is always fun to admire, the music is fantastic and it’s great to see downtown bustling.

My favorite Art Night last year was the night they projected “It’s a Wonderful Life” outside of Proctors the week before Christmas. It was freezing, but still loads of fun.

But so far the weather forecast for Friday evening is beautiful, 60 degrees and sunny. If I could have a wonderful time while it was 20 degrees and snowing, you’ll be fine. So go check it out. You might find a new monthly tradition.

Later in the week, I’ll be writing about an art exhibit, “Genuine Men” is also opening on Friday. Check back in a few days for details.

the arts community in the Capitol District is exciting. First Friday in Albany takes place on my doorstep in centersquare. I am a regular. It really is a showcase for the city, bringing people of all ages into city center engaged in a sort of communal embrace of local artists and eachother.

I have also been to Troy Night Out on the final friday of the month, which has introduced me to the edgier younger art scene across the river. I must say that Troy remains something of a mystery to me.

Schenectady is an undiscovered country. This past saturday I was scrambling to actually find Proctor's Theatre so I could participate in Pangea Day - a four hour free international live broadcast of short films that my sister is involved in producing.

Schenectady is so far away down route 7-it's like a day trip. I feel as though I need to pack a lunch and plan dinner just to get to a show at Procotors (which does ROCK!!).
