Streams and trolleys

Some upcoming events of interest to Greenpoint readers:

Leave your car behind

The Saratoga Springs Visitors’ Trolley begins its summer run this Thursday, June 26. The trolley, which makes regular runs down Broadway from Skidmore College to Saratoga Spa State Park, will run through Labor Day.

This year, CDTA plans to operate two trolleys, seven days a week, with expanded hours to accommodate increased demand for services.

The hour-long circuit begins at the Skidmore College campus near the Case Center at 10 a.m. After leaving the college, the trolley continues south down Broadway, through the Avenue of Pines and into the Spa State Park, making stops all along the way. The last trolley starts its run at 7:20 p.m. and finishes at 8:32 p.m.

Riders can board the trolley for a 50¢ one way ride or $1 for a round trip ride. The ride features open air views of Saratoga Springs as well as a short audio narration about Saratoga. The bus can be hailed from any street corner along the route by waving it down. Regular stops are at Case Center on the Skidmore campus, Woodlawn Commons at Wesley, Congress Park and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Local residents and visitors are encouraged to use the trolley, an ideal way to travel efficiently and inexpensively through Saratoga. The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce and CDTA, which operates the trolley, have developed brochures that contain a map and brief descriptions of the sites along the route. Brochures and schedules for the service are available at the Chamber offices, the Chamber’s Congress Park Information Booth near Congress Park, and the Saratoga Springs Visitors Center across the street from Congress Park. The brochure can also be downloaded from www.saratoga.org or www.cdta.org.

Exploring streams

A stream exploration program for adults and children will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2PM, at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, at 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar.

Under the guidance of a naturalist, parents and children will work together on activities that promote interaction with the environment, problem-solving and creativity. Participants will wade in a stream, catch stream creatures, record and then release these creatures back to the stream unharmed.

This lesson will take place outdoors and all materials are provided. Bring your journals. For those attending for the first time, we will have a journal for you to take home.

All families, including homeschooling families are welcome. Participants should dress for the outdoors. In case of inclement weather this program may be canceled. For more information call the center at (518) 475-0291.

Five Rivers is a 446-acre refuge of fields, forests and wetlands run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to enhance the public’s appreciation of and sense of responsibility for the environment.
