Crime drop is a matter of degrees

Whether temporarily reducing staffing is a good or bad idea appears to be a matter of some debate. But I think we can all agree that a drop in calls for police assistance is a positive development, even if those numbers start to climb when the temperature does.

Be neighborly: Clear sidewalks completely

Keeping the sidewalks 100 percent free of ice and snow strikes me as a Sisyphean task. Unless you’re out there with a blowtorch every day, I don’t know how you’d do it. That said, it does seem like a lot of Capital Region residents could do a better job of clearing their sidewalks.

No clean answer on shipping of crude

Over the past year, I’ve learned a lot about the safety issues plaguing the oil trains. What isn’t clear to me is how to address the problem, although I think requiring oil companies to make their crude less volatile before shipping it across the country on trains is a good idea.
