Super Bowl Pick
This year’s Super Bowl presents me with something of a conundrum: I do not know who to pick.
Part of the problem is that both teams are very good. Seattle has a great defense and a pretty good offense, and Denver has a great offense and a pretty good defense. My guess is that the game will be close and exciting and could go either way.
But my other problem stems from conflicting loyalties. With the exception of the season opener, I’ve picked the Seahawks to win every game this year, in honor of my Seattle friends Beka and Laurie, who were married in September. They are big Seahawks fans, and they would be absolutely delighted if Seattle won the Super Bowl.
But my Denver friends Melissa and Dave are huge Broncos fans. Normally I would be reluctant to pick the Broncos to win, as they beat my beloved Patriots to advance to the Super Bowl, and made the Patriots look absolutely inept in the process. But after the Broncos-Patriots game, Melissa posted a photograph of her joyous husband, 4-year-old son and parents on Facebook, and my heart softened. Plus, Melissa and Dave just had a baby boy, and a Broncos win would make them even happier than they already are. I want all of my friends to be happy. So who do I pick?
In the end, I can’t bring myself to root for Peyton Manning. He seems like a swell guy, and he’s probably the greatest NFL quarterback of all time. But I do not want him to win another Super Bowl. And, more importantly, I think the Seahawks can find a way to beat him.
Either way, it should be fun.
