NFL Picks, Week 4
Every year I participate in a Pigskin Pick ’em group organized by an obnoxious friend of mine from high school who spends his Sundays doing nothing but watching NFL football. I spend very little time watching football, and yet I continue to dream of beating him. And so every week I dutifully make my picks.
As always, the winning team is in caps.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS at St. Louis Rams — So the 49ers have been a bit of a disappointment thus far. But I think they can beat the Rams.
BALTIMORE RAVENS at Buffalo Bills — The Bills aren’t completely horrible ... but they’ll struggle against last year’s Super Bowl champs.
CHICAGO BEARS at Detroit Lions — I don’t trust the Lions against good teams. And the Bears are a good team.
CINCINNATI BENGALS at Cleveland Browns — The Browns showed some life last week, when they beat the woeful Minnesota Vikings. They’ll return to their hapless ways this week against the half-decent Bengals.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS at Jacksonville Jaguars — The Colts are pretty good, and the Jaguars are the worst NFL team in the history of the universe.
New York Giants at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS — The Chiefs are definitely for real, while the Giants look like one of the season’s big disappointments.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS at Minnesota Vikings — Both these teams are 0-3, which means they’re both pretty bad. But I suspect that Pittsburgh is the better bad team, if that makes any sense. Their losses seem to have come at the hands of better teams than the Vikings’ losses, and so I’m predicting that Minnesota will be 0-4 after this weekend.
Arizona Cardinals at TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS — Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman has been benched, and the Buccaneers are clearly a team in disarray. So why am I picking them to win? Because the Cardinals aren’t that good, and because maybe new QB Mike Glennon is just what the team means.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS at Houston Texans — The Seahawks are scary good right now, and they’ll continue their winning ways against the Texans, a team that is not especially good or scary.
New York Jets at TENNESSEE TITANS — Team Blowhard has a 2-1 record, which is much better than expected. But the Titans also have a better-than-expected 2-1 record, and are playing at home, so I’m taking them.
Dallas Cowboys at SAN DIEGO CHARGERS — I was all set to pick the Cowboys, but then I remembered that the Cowboys like to mess with my mind. So I’m taking the Chargers, just because.
Philadelphia Eagles at DENVER BRONCOS — Remember back in week 1, when the Eagles were awesome and exciting and taking the world by storm? Well, they’ve since lost two in a row and their luster has faded considerably. I certainly don’t expect them to beat the mighty Broncos, who are, quite possibly, the best team in the league.
Washington Redskins at OAKLAND RAIDERS — The Raiders are favored in this game, but I have no idea why.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS at Atlanta Falcons — I thought long and hard about this pick. Since I started doing Pigskin Pick’em, I have always picked the Patriots to win. And the team has generally rewarded my loyalty by winning most of their games. However, I’m questioning whether this trend will continue. But I just glanced at Atlanta’s record, and saw that it’s not particularly good. So I’m picking the Patriots. I’m not sure they can win on the road, but I’m sticking with them. For now.
Miami Dolphins at NEW ORLEANS SAINTS — Both these teams have 3-0 records. I’m going with home advantage, because I like New Orleans and I like their QB, Drew Brees.
Last week’s results:
Me: 10-6 Overall: 33-15
My obnoxious friend: 10-6 Overall 36-12
