NFL Picks, Week 5
Every year I participate in a Pigskin Pick ’em group organized by an obnoxious friend of mine from high school who spends his Sundays doing nothing but watching NFL football. I spend very little time watching football, and yet I continue to dream of beating him. And so every week I dutifully make my picks.
As always, the winning team is in caps.
Buffalo Bills at CLEVELAND BROWNS — Both of these teams are 2-2, and seem evenly matched. I’m giving the advantage to the Browns, because they’re at home.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS at Chicago Bears — These two teams also seem evenly matched, but the Saints have had a more difficult schedule, and until the Bears do something really impressive, I’m reluctant to pick them against a seemingly more formidable opponent.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS at Cincinnati Bengals — I didn’t do all that well on my picks last week, but I really don’t care, because I picked the Patriots to win and they did. Ha! So of course I am going to pick New England to beat the Bengals.
Detroit Lions at GREEN BAY PACKERS — The Lions have the better record, but Green Bay is coming off a bye and playing on their home field.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS at Tennessee Titans — The Titans have been pretty good, but with QB Jake Locker out with an injury they’ll struggle against one of the top teams in the NFL.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS at Indianapolis Colts — Yikes! This should be a great match-up. I plan to pick the Seahawks to win every game this season in honor of my Seattle friends Beka and Laurie, who chastised me for not picking them to win in week 1.
Jacksonville Jaguars at ST. LOUIS RAMS — The St. Louis Rams are pretty bad, but the Jaguars might go down in history as one of the worst teams of all time.
Baltimore Ravens at MIAMI DOLPHINS — I just don’t have a lot of confidence in the Ravens right now. Of course, I’ve been wrong about the Ravens before, most notably last season, when I simply could not believe that they were a Super Bowl-caliber team.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES at New York Giants — I’m not picking the Giants to win until they actually win.
Carolina Panthers at ARIZONA CARDINALS — The Panthers are coming off a bye ... and the Cardinals aren’t very good. But neither are the Panthers.
DENVER BRONCOS at the Dallas Cowboys — Will someone please beat the Broncos so that we don’t have to hear about how they might be better than the undefeated Patriots team? Sadly, I don’t think the Cowboys are up to this task.
Houston Texans at SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS — Apparently people were burning Texans QB Matt Schaub’s jersey after last week’s loss to Seattle. Houston fans had better get used to losing, because it will continue this week against the 49ers.
SAN DIEGO CHARGERS at Oakland Raiders — You know, the Chargers aren’t half-bad this year.
New York Jets at ATLANTA FALCONS — For most of last week’s game against the Patriots, the Falcons looked totally outclassed. They’ll return to form this week against Team Blowhard.
Last week’s results:
Me: 8-7 Overall: 41-22
My obnoxious friend: 11-4 Overall 47-16
