NFL Picks, Week 10
Every year I participate in a Pigskin Pick ’em group organized by an obnoxious friend of mine from high school who spends his Sundays doing nothing but watching NFL football. I spend very little time watching football, and yet I continue to dream of beating him. And so every week I dutifully make my picks.
As always, winning teams in caps.
INDIANAPOLIS at Jacksonville — I still expect the Colts’ amazing rookie QB, Andrew Luck, to struggle on occasion, but he should be able to lead to his team to victory against a hapless Jaguars team.
NEW YORK GIANTS at Cincinnati Bengals — The Giants are coming off a bad loss. My guess is that they will rebound with a strong and convincing win against an imploding Bengals team.
Tennessee at MIAMI — The Dolphins have been a real surprise and could shock the world by finishing the season — or at least this week — with a winning record.
Detroit at MINNESOTA — These teams are pretty much evenly matched. I am giving the edge to the Vikings because they’re at home, but it could go either way, and both teams have a bad habit of losing games I expect them to win, and vice versa. Which is why I fully expect my Minnesota pick to guarantee a Detroit victory.
Buffalo at NEW ENGLAND — The Patriots tend to do well after bye weeks and the Bills are not a particularly worthy foe. On my trip to Denver, my friend Dave kept wondering why I’m not a Bills fan, and I said, “Because I root for New England teams.” But I will say this: If I had to pick a New York team to root for, it would be the Bills. Just not against the Patriots.
ATLANTA at New Orleans — Atlanta is going to lose sometime. But not this week.
San Diego at TAMPA BAY — I almost picked the Chargers to win this game, but then I remembered that after last week, when Tampa Bay beat Oakland on the road and quietly broke even on wins and losses, I vowed to take the Buccaneers a little bit more seriously. So, yes, I am picking Tampa Bay to win this game and for the free-fall in San Diego to continue unabated.
DENVER at Carolina — Carolina picked up a nice win last week. Will it happen again? I don’t think so, because the Broncos are beginning to come together.
Oakland at BALTIMORE — Oakland has no chance.
New York Jets at SEATTLE — The Seahawks are doing pretty well, while Team Blowhard has struggled all season long. I expect both trends to continue on Sunday.
DALLAS at Philadelphia — Is there a sadder team in the NFL right now than the Eagles? There are worse teams, yes, but sadder? They just seem like a sad, sad bunch to me. And when they lose to the Cowboys on Sunday, they’ll get a little sadder.
St. Louis at SAN FRANCISCO — There’s been some screaming about whether 49ers QB Alex Smith can really lead his team to the promised land. But from where I sit, this all seems like crazy talk. San Francisco looks like a very good football team, and they should crush the Rams on Sunday.
Houston at CHICAGO — This is a tricky one. But I think Houston will have a tough time beating the Bears and their ferocious defense in Chicago, and that QB Jay Cutler will put together one of his good games.
Kansas City at PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh is steadily improving, while Kansas City appears to be getting worse.
Week 9 Results:
Me: 11-3 Overall: 79-53
My Obnoxious Friend: 11-3 Overall: 89-43
