Favorite soul songs

I have tickets to see Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings at The Egg on Saturday, and I’m very excited.

Jones is a soul/funk singer with a full-throated voice and classic sound, and I imagine she puts on a terrific concert; her influences include James Brown and Ike and Tina Turner.

In preparation for the concert, I thought it would be fun to compile a list of my 20 favorite (though not necessarily classic) soul/funk songs. Anyway, here they are.

20. “The Seed” by Cody ChesnuTT
19. “The Tears of a Clown” by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
18. “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green
17. “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5
16. “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder
15. “Band of Gold” by Freda Payne
14. “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding
13. “Stop! In The Name of Love” by The Supremes
12. “I’ll Take You There” by The Staples Sisters
11. “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” by James Brown
10. “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King
9. “If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night)” by Me’shell Ndegecello
8. “Jungle Boogie” by Kool and the Gang
7. The theme from “Shaft” by Isaac Hayes
6. “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by the Temptations
5. “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield
4. “Pusherman” by Curtis Mayfield
3. “Everyday People” by Sly and the Family Stone
2. “Respect” by Aretha Franklin
1. “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye

And if I stretch the definition of soul a bit (OK, in some cases, maybe a lot), I also really like:

1. “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson
2. “Kiss” by Prince
3. “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse
4. “Ms. Jackson” by OutKast
5. “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor

I'd add Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" and Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe."
