Bests of 2010

Over the weekend, someone asked me what I thought was the best movie of the year. I replied that it was hard to say, because I really haven’t seen many of the year’s top movies. The Coen Brothers remake of “True Grit,” for instance, opens today. And a lot of the movies I see popping up on critics’ lists — “Carlos,” “Everyone Else,” “Enter the Void” — haven’t played here, and probably never will. But so far a list of my favorite films of 2010 would have to include:

1. Toy Story 3 — Has the third film in a beloved franchise ever been this good?

2. The Ghost Writer — This dark political thriller ranks with Polanski’s best

3. Winter’s Bone — The nail-biting story of a teenage girl searching for her no-good-dad in Ozark country

4. The American — Most people hate this quiet George Clooney film. I loved it.

5. Shutter Island — My favorite of Scorsese’s recent string of films with Leonardo DiCaprio

6. Let Me In — A great remake of an excellent Swedish horror movie

7. The Kids Are All Right — A warm-hearted family movie

8. The Town — Flawed, but also great

9. The restored Metropolis — OK, this film was made in 1927, but its restoration was one of the big events of the year

10. Black Swan — Flawed, but great in parts

Honorable mention: Salt and Machete — For sheer ridiculousness and entertainment value

My favorite CDs of 2010 would have to include:

Brothers by the Black Keys

This is Happening by LCD Soundsystem

Manners by Passion Pit

Eyelid Movies by Greenwich natives Phantogram

Junky Star by Ryan Bingham

Tern Rounders by the Capital Region’s own Tern Rounders

Dream Attic by Richard Thompson

Transference by Spoon

Contra by Vampire Weekend

My favorite television of 2010 — at least that I watched in 2010 — would have to include:

The second season of Twin Peaks
The first season of Dexter
The fourth season of The Wire
The third season of Weeds
The first season of Skins

My favorite books of 2010 would have to include:

Ummm, I’m not sure I’ve actually read any books published this year. But I will. In the meantime, here are some books I really enjoyed:

Columbine by Dave Cullen

Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris

Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck

Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra

The Family by Jeff Sharlett

The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean

How to Be Inappropriate by Daniel Nester

The Portable Dorothy Parker

Snow by Orhan Pamuk
