Lewis Jackson’s ugly free throw attempt landed on the back iron and stopped dead as if it was deflated. Instead, it dropped through, and Purdue squeezed the air out of Siena’s season, 72-64, in the first round of the NCAA tournament South Regional Friday at the Spokane Arena.

Best guy foods
Wednesday, November 18, 2009

The current issue of Men’s Fitness magazine contains a feature article titled “Best Guy Foods in America.”

It’s illustrated with lush color photography calculated to make you drool.

I perused it quickly, musing about the foods listed and their possible connection to another article in the same issue. The second piece was about how nature considers males dispensable and that’s why more males are born but few make the distance to old age where the population shifts greatly to favor females.

Back to the favorite guy foods, one dish was a cheese-covered chili. Who doesn’t like chili? I think fried chicken was there, too, though I can’t say that with certainty. And bacon cheeseburgers were probably there and if they weren’t, they should have been. Lobster was toward the top of the list — broiled and served with drawn butter, of course.

What stood out for me among the guy foods was the blue cheese-crusted ribeye steak with bone in. If you’re a carnivore, it doesn’t get much better than that. My standard disclaimer: It’s not something you should eat every day. But for a special occasion, say your birthday, treat yourself. Pair it with a baked potato with butter and sour cream and a Caesar salad.

It doesn’t have to be a ribeye steak, though that’s my personal favorite. For a version that uses a filet mignon, which I found on the Web site allrecipes.com, click here.

What’s your favorite “guy food” (and you don’t have to be a guy, of course). E-mail us at foodforum@dailygazette.net.
