My, how they've grown

Our newsroom here in Schenectady was flooded with students and their families Thursday as we held the annual recognition ceremony for the winners of our Student Gazette contest. (View a photo gallery of the ceremony.)

We receive hundreds of entries from throughout the region each year in five categories: News/features, opinion, sports, comics and photography. Our advertising department holds its own contest, awarding prizes for the best student-produced advertisements.

Some of yesterday's winners have won in previous years and are consequently familiar faces. There were consequently moments Thursday when I felt like a long-lost great aunt, marveling at how much some of these young people -- Kaylee Older, Ben Kimble and Bethy Behuniak to name just a few -- had grown since last year.

Now that the prizes have been awarded, we'll get to work on laying out the special Student Gazette publication we'll publish May 10. That supplement will include the winning entries as well as the group shot we took on Thursday.
