News worth paying for
Monday, August 3, 2009

Welcome to our new Web site.

The site has been redesigned, with a new look and new features. But I think the biggest change this morning is the amount of local news you'll find here.

We limited the stories we posted on our previous Web site to the bigger stories of the day. Now, we'll try to post more of the stories our reporters write each day. As you'll see, they're a productive bunch.

This morning, for example, you'll find these local stories:

-Schenectady reporter Kathleen Moore takes a hard look at the Schenectady Police Department's overtime spending.

-We've got an update on Saturday's shooting in Schenectady involving a city police officer and a knife-wielding man.

-General Electric union employees met Sunday to discuss amending the union's four-year national contract. It's a controversial change linked to the company's plans to build a battery plant in Schenectady. Reporter Jessica Harding talked to some of the workers.

We've got two stories from Tatiana Zarnowski from Saratoga Springs. Officials in Saratoga County and the city of Saratoga Springs are discussing merging their dispatching operations. And she writes about a delay in an agreement between the city and Saratoga Emergency Medical Services for ambulance services.

-Jim McGuire writes that a Gloversville activist is starting his own publication to expose what he says is rampant corruption in Fulton County.

-Justin Mason has written a feature on Bernie Kaczkowski, a longtime Schenectady garage owner who is closing up shop.

-Steve Williams writes about this coming weekend's film festival in Ballston Spa. It may not be Cannes, but it is growing.

-In Gloversville, Jim McGuire writes about the ongoing ethics investigation involving Councilman John Castiglione.

-Sports reporter Bob Weiner covered the arrival of the Giants at training camp at the University at Albany Sunday.

-The New York State Little League championship tournament held at Indian Meadows Park was good news for Glenville. Reporter Ameerah Cetawayo tells you why.

- We sent Mike Goot, who usually covers education for us, to Saratoga yesterday to cover the annual hat competition.

-Jeff Wilkin's history page profiles the Nott Terrace High School’s Class of 1949, which is celebrating its 60th reunion this year.

-Brian McElhiney, who covers music for us, reviewed last night's Billy Bragg show at The Egg. He liked it.

-Reporter Phil Janack writes about Ian Wilkes, whose horse came in second in Saturday’s Jim Dandy at Saratoga Race Course.
