Life was anything but easy growing up on Cutler Street during the early 1940s. At the time, the bustling street in Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant neighborhood was crowded with low-income and immigrant families. Poverty was common, and there was seldom time to do anything but work.

The voting is complete on our survey of how readers liked two proposed new comic strips and which of four suggested comics to replace.
With hundreds of votes and dozens of comments both on the Web site and by mail, one race had a clear winner: We will replace Gasoline Alley.
Arctic Circle easily outpolled Single and Looking. But a significant number of readers wrote in to say they didn't like either choice. So we will hold Arctic Circle in reserve while we publish samples of two other potential replacement strips and invite readers to weigh in on those.
I'll write more about this in Sunday's column.
