Defense key for Danes

By Bob Weiner
Friday, October 12, 2012

UAlbany will stress defense over offense this year.

At least that's the talk at today's opening day of practice at SEFCU Arena.

Gone are the Great Danes' top two scorers in Gerardo Suero, the nation's seventh-leading point maker at 21.6 ppg, and Logan Aronhalt (13.8 ppg). Suero is playing professionally, while Aronhalt transferred to Maryland.

That leaves senior point guard Mike Black (13 ppg) as the top returning scorer, and he vows the Danes will be tougher on defense.

Other key players include Jacob Iati, Luke Devlin, Jayson Guerrier, Blake Metcalf and a slimmed-down John Puk at center. Among the newcomers are red-shirt freshman Peter Hooley, a 6-5 marksman from Australia.
