No AHL team coming to Utica

According to the Abbotsford News, the Heat, the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, will be staying in Abbotsford as no deal was reached with Vancouver for the Canucks to move their recently acquired Peoria Rivermen to the city about an hour's drive from Vancouver.

According to the News, Calgary was willing to step aside if the city could reach an agreement with Vancouver, but that never happened. The rumor was that Calgary would move their AHL team across the continent to Utica, as first blogged by Don Laible of the Utica Observer Dispatch earlier this year, for a 10-year contract. This would open up the Abbotsford arena for Vancouver to move the Peoria Rivermen to British Columbia.

Vancouver, whose AHL affiliate has been the Chicago Wolves, bought the Rivermen from the St. Louis Blues, who are expected to take over the Wolves. But now, Vancouver cannot move the team to Abbotsford and must figure out what to do with the franchise.
