Devils beat Phantoms in preseason opener
The Albany Devils opened their preseason slate with a 5-3 win over Adirondack in Voorhees, N.J., on Tuesday afternoon, putting up five goals in the first two periods. Both David Wohlberg and Mike Sislo scored twice for Albany.
Defenseman Raman Hrabarenka opened the scoring with a first-period power-play goal, assisted by Harri Pesonen, at 2:10. Wohlberg scored at 4:07, assisted by Pesonen and Hrabarenka, then Sislo found the net at 7:41 on assists from Phil DeSimone and Mike Hoeffel.
Adirondack's Danny Syvret got the Phantoms on the board with a power-play strike at 14:35, assisted by Brandon Manning and Tyler Brown. Albany's Darcy Zajac dropped the gloves with Oliver Lauridsen early in the period.
Sislo opened the second period with his second goal at 1:04, unassisted. Matt Ford got Adirondack back within two goals at 13:16, assisted by Manning and Sean Couturier, but Wohlberg's second tally put Albany up, 5-2, at 17:44.
Wohlberg's second goal was scored shorthanded against goalie Niko Hovinen, who had 18 saves on 23 shots. Albany netminders Keith Kinkaid and Scott Wedgewood split time, combining for 45 saves on 48 shots.
Adirondack's Tye McGinn scored a power-play goal in the third, assisted by Couturier and Manning at 15:06. It was the first AHL game behind the bench for Adirondack's new head coach, Terry Murray, since 1990.
Albany was 1-for-2 on the power play, Adirondack was 2-for-9.
Albany will play road preseason games against the Connecticut Whale (tonight) and Binghamton (Saturday) before moving camp to Albany on Oct. 9. The Devils open the season Oct. 13 at home against Manchester at 5:05 p.m.
