The rockin' Aerodrome

By Judith Patrick
Thursday, July 7, 2011

Some legendary musicians, including Janis Joplin, have performed in Schenectady over the years.

According to our archives, Joplin played the Aerodrome in June of 1970, just months before she died.

Sadly, we didn't write many concert reviews back then, so there's no record in our paper of how the show went. Were you there?

There's a concert poster floating around the auction markets of a Janis Joplin show on June 26, 1968 ( ). Maybe she played multiple shows in the five years or so that it was open? A quick google search didn't answer that question, but I did find a few people saying they went to see Janis at the Aerodrome on the "Growing Up Woodlawn" facebook page- . You have to scroll down to April 18 to see the post.

Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and more played there; and then the hang out after the show for them was a local bar a couple blocks up on State at Wilson Ave.

August 20, 1969 a quiet little band calling themselves Led Zeppelin played two shows, one for the kids and later for the grownups.

Wonder whatever happened to them? That boy singer could really belt it out.

There are plenty of people in town who probably know for sure if there was a 1968 show, but we couldn't find any reference to it in our own archives.

We saw the Web references to a 1968 poster as well, but there are also some online reports that the poster - which doesn't have a year printed on it - was from the 1970 show. The month-and-day date on that poster, June 26, is the same date of the 1970 concert.

After the show Janis went to Decrosta's Bar on state st. For years her autograph, on a napkin hung on the wall. Garry Davis

Decrosta's - that's the bar - and definitely, yes, Led Zepplin was there at Aerodrome - so was I - back then it was more of an "underground venue" - I was 16, 17 years old, so it was a while ago, but I will never ever forget it and I am so glad there are people who remember and were there - I grew up on Wilson Ave - Woodlawn was the best.
