The National Rifle Association is warning its members about Gov. Andrew Cuomo's upcoming state of the state address.

The group's institute for legislative action put members on notice this Friday in a release promising an "historic assault" on gun rights from the state government. The group argues that Cuomo's initial comments about gun control are extreme and senseless.

"These proposals do nothing except criminalize law-abiding gun owners, target shooters and hunters, and do nothing to prevent crime or impact public safety," the NRA says in its release.

The proposals from Cuomo include a ban on assault weapons. This position was reiterated on Saturday, when his spokesman decried a gun control proposal from the Senate Republicans.

The release from the NRA notes that the state already has a 10-round magazine limit, but Cuomo is pushing for a lower limit. " In addition, the conversation has included more draconian registration requirements for all firearms," says the NRA. "The slate of gun control bills this session is expected to be long."

In particular, the NRA is focused already on

The NRA ends its warning by encouraging people to contact their state legislators and Cuomo. "Anti-gun forces are going to move swiftly and your urgent assistance is needed," the group warns.

It's interesting to see Cuomo thrown in with the anti-gun crowd, as he is a self-proclaimed gun owner.
