U.S. Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, will serve as a minority member of the House Appropriations Committee.

The committee has a lot of influence over federal spending, as allocations of money need to be approved there before a floor vote in the House.

“I look forward to giving the North Country a voice in the Committee’s important work,” said Owens in a statement.

“This provides an opportunity to support investment in federal programs that help businesses and families in the 21st District while advocating for important economic drivers like Fort Drum," he said. "At the same time, we must work towards responsible cuts to federal spending to reduce the debt and set the country back on track towards fiscal responsibility.”

This appointment requires Owens to step down from the other committees he previously served on, including the Agriculture Committee, the Armed Services Committee, and the Small Business Committee.

“I have been proud to represent Fort Drum on the Armed Services Committee and look forward to continuing my commitment to Fort Drum’s future growth through service on the Appropriations Committee,” Owens said. “I will ensure that farmers and small businesses in the district are represented on the Committee as well so they have every opportunity to succeed and drive the local economy.”
