Friends in high places
Two Democratic state Senate hopefuls in the Capital Region are getting a boost from fellow party members on the national level.
This morning, U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, endorsed Cecilia Tkaczyk in her bid for the 46th Senate District seat. On Tuesday night, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand endorsed Robin Andrews in her quest for the 43rd Senate District seat.
“Upstate families need a strong advocate in the state Senate who will fight to bring jobs back to our region. That is why I am proud to stand with Cecilia Tkaczyk and support her candidacy," Tonko said in a statement.
He went on to predict that Tkaczyk will stand up for women's rights, students, raising the minimum wage, cutting unfunded mandates and stopping corporate welfare.
The 46th Senate District includes Montgomery and Schenectady counties. Tkaczyk is running against Assemblyman George Amedore, R-Rotterdam.
On Tuesday night, Gillibrand released a statement backing Andrews, a town supervisor in Columbia County. In explaining her endorsement, Gillibrand cited Andrews' career as a budget and planning consultant and small business owner.
“Robin Andrews has the experience and skills necessary to lead the 43rd District to a brighter future,” she said in a statement. "As a resident of this district, I will be proud to call Robin my state Senator.”
The 43rd Senate District includes part of Saratoga County. Andrews is running against Saratoga County Clerk Kathy Marchione.
