Saratoga County Democratic Committee Chairman Todd Kerner said he never submitted Patti Southworth's name to Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a potential candidate to be the next county clerk.

On Tuesday, Southworth, supervisor for the town of Ballston, told the Gazette that she was one of three names suggested by Kerner to succeed Kathy Marchione, who was elected to the state Senate.

"I don't know why she would tell you that," said Kerner, who emphatically rejected the idea that Southworth's name was floated by him.

He wouldn't identify the suggested names submitted to Cuomo, who can fill the vacant position in 2013. He would only say, "We recommended some names of very qualified people."

Kerner added that a variety of sources are submitting names for consideration, noting that local Republicans have advanced the idea of appointing Halfmoon Republican Craig Hayner.

I also want to add that Kerner took issue with describing Southworth as the 2011 Democratic nominee, as she was not endorsed by the county committee and didn't receive a waiver to run on the line. Instead, she got the line (or the nomination) by winning a primary as a write-in candidate.

Patti Southworth in a member of the Independence Party, not the Democratic Party. Now why would anyone ask a Democrat if his party endorsed her? Why not ask the Republicans, too? Silly reporter didn't do ANY homework. Maybe next time he'll Google the State Independence Party for a little background. Perhaps the Gazette should review the tape before suggesting that Patti would claim support from the Democratic Party. Good Ole Todd, ever the diplomat.
