Whitney Viewing Stand
A viewing stand at Saratoga's Oklahoma Track will be named after the Whitney family.
The New York Racing Association Board approved a proposal today to name the viewing stand after the historic family, which continues to work for the city and racing through the efforts of philanthropist Marylou Whitney and husband John Hendrickson, an adviser to the board.
The announcement of the naming and plans to unveil the project this summer seems to indicate that any issues about the project have been resolved. Horse trainers and owners complained about the location of the multilevel viewing stand, which prompted NYRA to call for a review of the plan in April.
UPDATE: NYRA spokesman Eric Wing said the viewing stand is scheduled to be completed this summer. He said they discussed the concerns of the horsemen and have moved the viewing stand location to the eighth pole.
At the meeting, the board also confirm that upgrades on two backstretch dormitory upgrades will be completed before the Saratoga Race Course meet in July. NYRA has planned for 10 more dormitories to receive the same treatment next year.
Fans this summer will also have the possibility of watching Saratoga races without any delay on the Capital District Off-Track Betting corp. channel.
