Challenge for Accounts
Incumbent Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Accounts John Franck will likely have a challenge this year.
John Arpei, a long-time city resident and retired field auditors with the state Comptroller's Office, will be running as a Republican, said city Republican Committee Chairman David Harper.
"He has impressed me that he has tremendous knowledge of municipal finance and a lot of knowledge about real property assessments,"Harper said of Aprei. He added that Arpei is well known in the community and active with the Knights of Columbus.
Assuming Arpei gets on the ballot, which is a low threshold, this will be the first challenge for Franck, who has run unopposed every election since first getting elected in 2005. "We look forward to presenting voters with a choice this fall," Harper said of the Accounts race.
When asked to contrast Arpei and Franck, Harper said, "I think [Arpei] is very level headed and very courteous and civil to everybody .... I'm not saying that John Franck is not [level headed and courteous]."
At this point in the campaign, Franck has a big fundraising lead over Arpei, who has yet to register a campaign committee with the state. According to his January filing, Franck has $8,635.59 in his campaign war chest.
