Gambling with the Whitney fortune

The biggest bet of Kevin Brockley’s life won’t cost him a dime.

Thanks to Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson, this Saturday the Gansevoort resident will get to make a $15,000 win wager on the Whitney Invitational Handicap. Brockley is the first of five fans who will be chosen this summer to place a bet on a Saturday during the meet with $15,000.

“It is absolutely amazing, a phenomenal opportunity,” Brockley said in a statement. “Wow, this has all the makings of a good time.”

Whitney and Hendrickson are spending $75,000 on this promotion, which they created as part of this year’s Saratoga 150 celebration. The couple are also Sesquicentennial Honorary Chairs.

In a statement, Whitney said, “Saratoga 150 is going to be the biggest celebration in our town’s history. It needed excitement, so John came up with a fun idea.”

Hendrickson said the idea struck him as one that would appeal to Saratoga’s loyal fans and possibly attract new fans. He noted that he's not much of a gambler, saying, "$20 to win, $20 to show. I really don't bet very often. I am very careful on how I spend my allowance."

On Friday, Whitney will be hosting the city’s floral fete and ice cream social, which will run down Broadway and conclude at the Canfield Casino in Congress Park.

Fans can register for the four remaining wager opportunities at The other designated races are Fourstardave Handicap on Aug. 10, the Alabama Stakes on Aug. 17, the $1 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 24 and the Woodward Stakes on Aug. 31.
