Horse program for vets gets national exposure
Bob Nevins and the Saratoga Warhorse foundation got national television coverage this week.
The program pairs struggling veterans with retired thoroughbreds, with the connection designed to release the stress that veterans have bottled inside themselves. Nevins, a former medevac pilot from the Vietnam war, founded the program partially in response to the rise in suicides among U.S. military personnel since the post-9/11 wars.
His efforts were featured on an ABC News segment, which you can watch below.
Nevins previously told the Gazette he sees veterans who feel broken, closed off from the rest of the world.
“They come in very skeptical, because they can’t feel, they can’t connect,” he said. “We send a kid to war; when he comes back we’ve got to take care of him.”
