Potential Republican primary in Halfmoon supervisor race

By Lombardo David
Thursday, April 4, 2013

Halfmoon Supervisor Mindy Wormuth will face a challenge for her party's nomination if she decides to run this fall.

Kevin Tollisen, a town justice in Halfmoon until resigning abruptly on Wednesday, is meeting with the Halfmoon Republican Committee next week to secure their endorsement for town supervisor. It's not clear if Wormuth, who did not return a voicemail on Thursday, is running again.

Saratoga County Republican Committee Chairman John Herrick said he believed Wormuth and Tollisen would both seek the party's endorsement. He wasn't sure if the candidate that doesn't get the endorsement would pursue a primary challenge.

Tollisen, 41, said he is running because the town is at an important crossroads. He highlighted the town's burgeoning development, which he said needs to be advanced with better planning. He wants to see a master plan and cooperation with neighboring localities to ease traffic congestion.

Wormuth has come under fire in recent years because of campaign contributions that exceeded limits, questions about properties she owned and the nomination of a 22-year-old to run the county's animal shelter. She cruised to election in 2011, for her third-term, defeating Democrat Deanna Stephenson, 2,049 votes to 1,525 votes.

Stephenson, who is still involved in Halfmoon's political season, might be the Demcoratic candidate again. She ran a spirited campaign in 2011, especially considering Wormuth was not opposed in 2009.
"I'm considering a local political position," Stephenson said on Thursday.

Tollisen grew up in Halfmoon and served on the town board from 1998 to 2002. He was elected town justice in 2002 and has a law office in Mechanicville.
