City art projects will debut on May 31
Artists busy painting huge pointe shoe sculptures for a public art project are now halfway through the allotted time to do so.
The citywide arts project, Saratoga En Pointe, will debut at 6 p.m. May 31 with 24 colorful shoes displayed at the National Museum of Dance, the museum announced today.
Then the shoes will be sent to their permanent homes at businesses and public places. Donors are sponsoring the placement of the shoes and working with local entities to do so.
A committee chose local artists to embellish the shoes, and the artists send in monthly updates to the dance museum, the project's organizer.
The same night the sculptures will be displayed together, the museum will celebrate the grand opening of the newly renovated Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Hall of Fame and induct Anna Pavlova, a turn-of-the-century ballerina.
Members of the public will be able to get involved in the arts project later with a photo contest after the sculptures are placed at their locations.
Visit the museum's website to see the artists' original sketches for their creations.
