Organization in running for $25K Home Depot prize
A local not-for-profit organization that helps veterans is one of four organizations nationwide in the running for a $25,000 Home Depot gift card.
VETHELP, which is part of Saratoga County Rural Preservation Co. based in Ballston Spa, is competing as part of the second annual year-long Aprons in Action Facebook contest run by the Home Depot Foundation. The foundation each month chooses nonprofit organizations that help veterans and then puts them up for a vote. The winner gets $25,000 to help fund a project for the organization or the community and is able to compete for a $250,000 grand prize along with the whole year's monthly winners at the end of May.
People can VOTE HERE daily through April 26 on a computer or mobile device.
This afternoon, VETHELP was the lead vote-getter ahead of the other three organizations, Shared Housing Services and The Barn in Tacoma, Wash.; The Baltimore Station in Baltimore; and Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans.
VETHELP runs the Guardian House, a homeless shelter for female veterans, and helps male and female homeless veterans find temporary and permanent housing, get jobs and secure health care.
"If we win the $25,000 from The Home Depot, we would be able to provide additional living space in our home that promotes healthy living for female veterans. The new addition to our facility would include a study for our veterans actively seeking employment and completing school work," said Budd Mazurek, executive director.
It also would add an exercise room to the home, an outdoor gardening area and storage space for veterans to gather household items to help them move out into independent quarters.
