Touring old Skidmore
Friday, August 28, 2009

The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation will hold its fifth walking tour of Saratoga Springs this summer at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, starting at the corner of Union Avenue and Circular Street.

The title of this tour is: “Old School: Historic Skidmore Campus.” The tour centers on Skidmore College’s old downtown campus.

Lucy Skidmore Scribner established the Young Women’s Industrial Club of Saratoga in 1903 in response to what she saw as an absence of practical educational opportunities for women in Saratoga Springs.

In 1911, as the club continued to thrive, it was chartered by the New York Board of Regents as the Skidmore School of Arts and, by 1922, it was chartered as Skidmore College, an institution granting four-year degrees.

As it continued to grow, several of the mansions overlooking Congress Park and along Union Avenue were acquired, which began to give the college a physical identity.

Leslie Benton will leads a tour of the original Skidmore College campus and other notable buildings in the vicinity, such as the John Clarke House and the Batcheller Mansion.

The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes. Cost is $5 per person. Reservations are encouraged, but not necessary. For more information or to make reservations, call the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation at 587-5030.
