Ice cream-eating contest today
Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Going to the track today? Check out the ice cream-eating contest sponsored by Stewart's Shops.

It takes place after the third race (post time 2:06 p.m.) at the Jockey Silks Room.

Children, teens, and adults face off in their own categories to see who can down a pint of the cold stuff the fastest.

The winner gets -- you guessed it -- more ice cream.

Register at the silks room if you want to compete.

The contest is part of the 14th annual Travers Festival that lasts all week.

Also today at the track, Mary Anne Macica of Saratoga Springs will raise money for the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA to help abused and neglected horses.

Nearly 200 ill and malnourished thoroughbreds owned by breeder Ernest Paragallo were rescued from a Greene County farm in April. About 70 have since been adopted, two of them by Macica.

The information booth will be set up near the jockey silks room.

Tonight, you and the kids can add to your collection of jockey signatures when Mike Luzzi, Kent Desormeaux, Rajiv Maragh, Jean Luc Samyn, Javier Castellano and others come downtown to the autographing session at Impressions of Saratoga on Broadway.

They'll be signing their own photos at 8 p.m. Bring $10 for each jockey whose John Hancock you want to nab; all proceeds benefit the Race Track Chaplaincy.

You can also help the backstretch community by donating gently used clothing for men, women and children; school supplies; bedding; towels; non perishable food; and winter clothing.

Impressions of Saratoga will collect the items and give you a 10 percent discount on any purchase this week.
