A different kind of race will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in the Hudson River at Fort Hardy Beach in Schuylerville.
Instead of thoroughbred horses racing, as they will be Saturday in Saratoga Springs, Hudson Crossing Park is hosting a cardboard boat race.
Racing participants will construct a "human-powered" boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100 percent recycled materials. The boat must be able to hold at least one person and be seaworthy enough to race a short distance on the river, according to organizer Marlene Bissell.
The fifth annual cardboard boat race is a day-long event that starts at 8 a.m. with registration for the race. Race entry fee is $10. However, live music and prizes are free. Rain date for the event is Sunday, Aug. 9.
Racers may build their boats ahead of time but can also build them on Saturday morning at Fort Hardy Beach, where materials will be available.

Hudson Crossing Park is a two-county educational park centered on and near Champlain Canal Lock 5 island on the Hudson River north of Schuylerville.
However, the boat race will not be at this location.
