I hear that CSPANs broadcast of the inauguration didn't include any talking heads, but I wanted to watch in HD so had to put up with the mindless chatter.
Yes, it was Roberts who screwed up the oath, and Obama tried to cover for him. It's refreshing to have a president who can think on his feet.
Did Cheney hurt his back trying to carry away a box of incriminating memos, or were they all destroyed in that mysterious closet fire?
Comparing Friday night's opening ceremony in Beijing to a glorified "Las Vegas floor show" is like comparing Beethoven's Triple Concerto to the Hokey Pokey.
It seems to me that one of the great things about Obama's candidacy is that he is a role-model for African-American adolescents, and living proof that that they are not "second-class" citizens. I trust him to handle this issue with finesse so as to bring people together, and find it hard to believe that he would leverage the situation for his personal advantage. There was another candidate who took that approach, and the voters rejected the politics of division.
I was taught in a Genetics course a few years back that there are about 10 genes that regulate skin color in humans, each having a small, additive effect. Thus, Obama's skin color is not simply a matter of a single dominant "black" gene overriding a recessive "white" gene. If it were that simple, then there would not be so many intermediate shades of skin color between "black" and "white."
People with Obama's skin color, regardless of their ethnicity, are often discriminated against in this country by those with a racial bias. Obama has made an historic achievement against this lingering backdrop of racial prejudice, and that is what his fellow journalists are pointing out. Not all issues are a matter of "black and white," and I don't really see where Strock is going with this.
In response to faraday3's comment above I would like to add another choice: D. All of the above. If your concern is the separation of Church and State, Carl, which I fully support, then why don't you also take John McCain to task for seeking the endorsement of the rabble-rousing Reverend John Hagee? Your apparent bias against Senator Obama appears to go beyond his relationship with his former pastor. Barack Obama is a uniter, Hillary Clinton is a divider, and John McCain is a flip-flopper. What are you, Mr. Strock?
Nothing that Mr. Obama has said or done that I am aware of leads me to believe that his core beliefs have been swayed by the histrionics indulged in on occasion by his former pastor. I often read your column, Carl, and some of the things you say reflect a certain degree of pomposity and intolerance that I find offensive. Had I stopped reading your column when you said something I found particularly egregious, which isn't often, I would have missed the many pearls of wisdom that you have bestowed on your readers. Perhaps Rev. Wright had several pearls to share with his congregation as well, and Mr. Obama tolerated his pomposity, as I tolerate yours, to broaden his horizons. I am confidant that he has the maturity and wisdom to separate the wheat from the chaff, and will make as fine a president as you are a columnist.
