Rswanker welcome to the real Amsterdam. Schenectady is no better. There are a lot of people out there that think the world owes them something and they don't care what they have to do to get it. I see it every day. There are stupid people out there. They are everywhere, they just don't know that they're stupid!

Its a shame that the only answer to the nursing home problem is to set up another bureaucratic committee to help a cash strapped county health facility which performs such a great service to the community. Maplewood Manor is the last stop in life for a lot of elderly and terminally ill Senior Citizens who can't afford private care. I can't believe that these people could not find the money to keep the nursing home open when we spend millions of dollars a year on prisoners who don't deserve the care they receive. Hundreds of thousands of people who are good honest citizens go hungry and without adequate healthcare. While felons enjoy cable TV, free health and dental care and three meals a day. Where is the justice in that!
Unfortunately we will all become old. We cannot stop the aging process and the only thing that will happen here is that the elderly will have little control over their future, again. I just hope our children won't make the same mistake that you people are making today when our time comes.

Go back to Madison Wisconsin and take care of the problems there! We have enough of our own without you adding to them.

Guns are inanimate objects. They don't kill, people do! You don't need a gun to kill somebody, just the will to do it. The local truck driver who was killed a couple of years ago while talking to his wife on his cell, did he deserve to die? Had he had a firearm on him he would probably be alive today! There are bad people everywhere especially when times are bad. If you feel safe walking in NYC you've been there during the day and only on the main avenues. You need to get out more and see the real world that is evolving because of the lack of respect that people have for one another, and the lack fear of eternal damnation for what we do on earth. We will all have to answer for what we do here and I don't want to have to answer sooner that I should.

Setting the Record Straight
In your opinion column today another person talks about how unions are bad for this country. I would like everyone to know that there is a difference between trade unions and public employee, teachers, auto workers and any of the other unions who protect workers that don't deserve a job.
A construction workers union such as Carpenters, Millrights, Ironworkers, Electrician, Laborers, Boilermakers, Operating Engineers, Sheetmetal and Steamfitters unions, do not have the perks which so many people scrutinize. We don't have paid sick days, vacations,or holidays. Having a job depends on how well you do your job. We pay for our own pensions, vactions and medical benefits and when they are in fiscal trouble, WE take cuts in our paychecks to keep them solvent. We pay state income tax on our pensions, unlike teachers, civil service employees and politicians. We fund our own training programs /safety programs (ie.OSHA training, Apprenticeship programs, first-aid,CPR etc.). We deliver to the job market a trained professional ready to work in a safe environment. We do now, what we have done for the last one hundred and thirty years, and ask nothing for it accept to retire with a little dignity.
In his inaugural address JFK said " Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country". Trade unions built this country, corporate greed is destroying it. People must realize that during tough economic times we can't depend on the government to bail us out. This was what befell the Egyptian and Roman empires. There is no easy way to get out of this, but bickering and trashing one another didn't work in Washington so I'm sure it won't work here.

The tanks in question were used to fill delivery trucks from Swan Cleaners. Its unfortunate that a local business which has its roots here has to pay for something that happened years ago. What ever happen to the Super Fund for this sort of thing!

What happens next is the "stupid committee", which will make the decisions on the elderly and the poor doesn't use the system so they won't feel the pinch.

Unfortunately for us and this country we decided to divide Church and State. No longer do people have respect for God or one another. First and second amendment rights have been taken to the extreme and being politically correct takes priority over doing what is right. Like it or not God built this country and unless we get back to the basics, man will destroy it!

I agree with Gibson that we are moving in the right direction but at whose expense. Every time I here about balancing the budget I here about cuts to the seniors. Prisoners have more benefits then us! We earned our way please leave us alone its hard enough to make ends meet on a fixed income.

Everyone talks about ways to create energy. Why does it have to be nuclear? The Hudson and Mohawk rivers could supply hydro electric power with minimal impact to the environment. It may take a little longer to do, but the end results would be far better than creating another brown spot in this state. We need to stop adding to our already insurmountable pollution in this state. Nuclear plants produce nuclear waste. We are running out of places to put this waste in this country and I know that I don't need it in my back yard when there are other alternatives. Congressman Gibson take care of Mount Trashmore (Albany Landfill) in Albany there's an energy project waiting to happen!
