estaban is right in some manner.. they are humans just like us... should you as a normal citizen be fired because of actions you made on emotions going through a bad divorce.. should you be fired because you got a dwi? these officers need and should have their cases on which they are charged with heard in court and have a court ruling BEFORE any dicipline is handled by the department.. to have a hearing and terminate someone before their case is heard before the court is opening the city up for a huge lawsuit. Officer are held by the law and should also be allowed due process like everyone else.
what's not right? a cop isn't allowed due process like everyone else.. just because he's a cop, you already have him guilty... "inocent until proven guilty" is the rigth of everyone.. put it this way, if it were the private sector and someone was alleged certain violations of law and was terminated (on the allegations) prior to investigation be completed, that company could face a huge lawsuit if the person was found inocent.. same thing applies here, if the city terminates and he is found not guilty, there will be a lawsuit.. everyone is quick to judge everyone else, but put yourself in the same shoes.. you would want your due process.. cops have rights too..
there was a time years ago that the schenectady police dept was a premier, well respected dept.
wolfden has a point.. the brass need to stop airing out stories in the media and start handling the situations at hand.. and on the same point, the men and women do a great job everyday with no recognition.. start printing some of these stories.
we need to see reality.. officers are human and will make mistakes in their personal lives like everyone else.. should these be aired out in the media for everyone to know? and mistakes that happen involving work, should be kept quite until the full investigation is complete and the discipline is handed out..
what really needs to happen here is the following. bennett was brought in as an outsider to oversee.. what he needs to do is replace the chief, assistant chiefs and captains.. you see, all these people are in the same clique. if you dont remove them, the same old story is going to continue.. there is no continuity in the department. bennett/mayor should step back and look at this constant variable. bring in an entire outside team of supervisors from chief down to captains and start enforcing policy fairly accross the board... no need to start or disban the department..
harolds.. arbitrators only make the recommendation.. agency heads and mayor make the decisions.. they either go with the recommendation or another form of dicipline.. know what your talking about before you comment...
im glad to see that people are reading through the smoke that the higher-ups are blowing and that they are the supervision that has failed! chaires will have a problem with any officer that has not been apart of "his team" and will make it difficult for them.. also, the problem with this vendetta scenerio is that officers are affraid to do their job the was it is supposed to be done. why would any officer put it out on the line for any schenectady citizen? all its going to take is a complaint of wrong doing and their career is going to be tarnished by chaires or the gazette weather the cop is in the right or not.. when there is a claim against an officer it is dragged through the media to the fullest extent, but when the officer is cleared of that wrong doing, you never hear of it, or its a one liner on NEVER any apology... maybe the media (and the department) should hold off on any such reports of wrong doing until the INVESTIGATION is complete and accurate. that might cut down on the bad press and image it gives to a department....WAIT, hold of on an inaccurate report? that makes too much sense.... lets just screw the person now, and let him deal with all the stress, embarassment and lost trust do to such reports...
wmarincic, sch'dy citizens are also given field sobriety tests.. sch'dy citizens aren't given a ride home after a minor fender bender... on a second note, sch'dy citizens aren't arrested at their home 2hrs after the fact for dwi... this is preferential treatment because of rank. you can bet, that if seber was not in the "clique" he would have been arrested..
