Hopefully the retirement of Johnstown's Mayor Slingerland will bring someone into that office with a more positive attitude towards inter-municipal cooperation. But more than 200 years of egotistical & selfish politics doesn't die easily so please don't count on it!

First, check out the next-to-last paragraph & see whether you agree with me that the Gazette is in dire need of better copy editing - PUH-LEEZE.
Second, isn't it a shame Carl Strock retired? I, for one, would love to hear his opinion of these candidates (and the candidates' opinion of his reporting on this court).

Why the Montgomery County Democratic party allowed Thomas "I Haven't Got a Clue" Quackenbush to run on their line after he spent the entire 2012 election season bashing Democratic Assemblyman Santa Barbara, Governor Cuomo, President Obama & just about every other Democrat in sight, is totally beyond my comprehension. It certainly wasn't for his bipartisan spirit & I haven't seen anything in his record upholding the Democratic Party's goals & objectives. Fie on you, whoever signed that authorization & fie on any Democrats who vote for him in the general election.

I don't have my copy of de Tocqueville handy so I'll have to go by memory. I believe he also mentioned that the uniqueness (at the time of his writing) of the American system of justice is the constitutionally-protected right to a trial by jury. It is extremely unlikely that a jury chosen from Town of Mayfield residents would have convicted Mr. O'Dell, no matter what the law said. I can well understand Mr. O'Dell's reluctance to be taken away in handcuffs so the awesome power of our government is still there to stifle dissent. Nevertheless, in the United States the people still retain their sovereignty in the final resort through their right to trial by jury.

To: wmarincic - I didn't make any comment on whether you were right or wrong but I notice even you don't use the man's name. Good journalism says that a victim's name should never be released in a crime related to sexual abuse & seldom otherwise unless it is particularly pertinent to the crime. The person's ethnicity, age & home address add nothing to the story. The only conclusion left to me is that the reporter carries biases that can't be restrained & end up being subtly inserted in the story. What it all amounts to is editorializing in a straight news story which, I repeat, is bad journalism.
Just as an aside, you may have noticed that most of my "PUH-LEEEZE" comments have been posted to stories without a byline, thereby making the reporter anonymous.

wmarincic's comment is very close to libel but only because a Gazette editor allowed a crime victim's name to be printed, contrary to most news organization's policies. PUH-LEEEZE!

Would anyone like to predict the Tea Party reaction to this Presidential request?

While I heartily congratulate all the honorees, especially the late Irv Dean whose musings I always enjoyed reading, it is unfortunate that the quality of the Gazette's copy editing continues to sink, even in this story.
To my recollection there were no sinkholes during Tropical Storm Irene that would have required "depth reporting." So if I can't figure out whether the entire Gazette staff earned a second place "in depth reporting" rather than the much more likely "in in-depth reporting," who can? PUH-LEEEZE!

Here we go again - ". . . took she and her siblings . . ." - where have the Gazette'e copy editors gone?
