Regarding the "military-style semi-automatic rifle", numerous other guns, just as readily available, would have produced the same result. The same result could also have been accomplished with a knife.

"60 Minutes" demonstrated many years ago that the demonized rifle (.223 caliber) is less destructive than another caliber commonly used for hunting, the .308, if I recall correctly. Various other rifles also commonly used for hunting, e.g., .243, .270, .30-06, etc., calibers are also more powerful than the .223 (AR-15). These other calibers are also available in semi-automatic form.

The .308 was previously standard issue in U.S. armed forces. The .223 packs less punch. There is some talk in military circles of discontinuing the .223 in favor of a larger caliber.

The authorities in charge of the police must step up and see to it that they use their time and resources wisely. The time of these officers could better have been spent solving real crimes, those with victims, or patrolling for drunk drivers.

rtu's post above offers a lot of wisdom. The link given is well worth reading.

I'd like to offer another link that sheds some light on the very complicated issue of race relations in this country.

Officeholders, candidates, parties, press, and public all need to do much more to face up to, discuss, and understand the underlying issues. Without this kind of effort, we shall never have any hope of finding any solutions.

Here are the pertinent disclaimers and disclosures:

I used to be an enrolled Democrat. I am now a "blank". I think both major parties and their candidates are not good enough for our country, which I love.

I often agree with Mr. Strock. I respectfully suggest to him that he has not performed up to his usual standard on this admittedly challenging issue.

I am white, not black.
