Is the guy who got the game misconduct a good player for Union, and how will that affect them tomorrow?
Also, I thought Coyle was out of control tonight. In the first period, after a call was made on him, it appeared he almost took the ref's head off... I hope coach sits him tomorrow, his stupidity cost them..
I thought the game was hard hitting, but some of Union's hits were clearly dirty (i.e. the 5 min major/Misconduct call).
Hopefully we have a great (and clean) game tomorrow.
Should be a great series next weekend! Cornell brought their A-game tonight to finish of Dartmouth.
If Cornell plays like they play tonight, they'll be tough to beat. However, the last two nights (esp. Friday) they looked poor. I don't think fatigue will be too much of a problem, as Cornell actually picked up their game as the night went on. I imagine they will get a day or two off to get some rest.
It's hard to make a prediction though. I don't think nerves will be as much of a problem for Cornell as it will be for Union (first quarterfinal series at Union). We'll see if that factor plays in Friday evening.
Union fans better get their tickets soon. There are going to be a lot of Cornell fans coming up to Schenectady next weekend. See you there Ken! Goodluck!
Gaudet went nuts after the call. He jumped off the back of the bench started pounding on the boards and yelling at the ref. After the goal was scored, he went nuts again, probably said something to the ref and got a penalty for his antics. Overall, very amusing. Never seen a coach get that angry...
The game was boring. Cornell came out with no intensity or heart. Im shocked they won the game. If they come out like next week against Union (if they make it) they will get trounced.
The admissions and financial aid folks here at Cornell make it clear that everyone's financial aid package is based upon need - regardless of athletic or academic merit. Whether this is true or not, I do not know. What is true is that there are no merit or athletic scholarships or grants here at Cornell. As a student here, I can tell you first hand that our large endowment does not go towards financial aid or a decreased tuition.
It has been of much debate over the past few weeks about Cornell's financial aid package compared to other Ivy League Schools like Princeton and Harvard - who are offering better packages to middle and upper class families who still can't afford $40-50k a year. Athletics is complaining that they are having a hard time competing with the other schools in the league.
This can be seen best through the hockey team. There is no reason why the best talent in the ECAC should not be heading for Cornell. We have the best fan base that travels with the club, a sold out rink of 4300 every night, a great student section and a grand tradition of hockey. Cornell is to ECAC hockey what Siena is to MAAC basketball. However, our recruiting has been poor over the past few years, a fact that our coach has attributed in part to financial aid packages.
Yes, a school like Cornell might be more prestigious than a Union College. However, Union might have more leeway in offering financial aid packages to their athletes. If not, Union, and their $50k/year tuition (as my cousin, a future Union student, will be paying next), probably could not compete against other schools in the league with lower tuition and/or better hockey programs.
Thank you Mr. Schott for responding to my post. I enjoy reading your work in the Gazette when I am home. Once again, congrats to Union and their hockey program and (hopefully) we will see you in Schenectady on the 14th.
While it is an incredible accomplishment, it should be of note that NONE of the Ivy League schools offer athletic scholarships to their players as well. These schools include 3 of the 5 top teams in the ECAC this year. So congrats to Harvard, Princeton and Cornell as well.
I'm looking forward to coming home to Schenectady and see Cornell-Union in two weeks. Time for some revenge on the Dutchmen...
