Very compelling blog, Mark. I've usually "covered" violence the way I "cover" everything--at some distance on the phone or through the eyes of other reporters.
When I worked in Massachusetts there was a very good and assertive reporter I knew named Ron Plock who worked for the North Adams radio station. He covered anything and everything, up close and personal.
Once a plane crashed into the Berkshire woods and Ron traipsed to the grisly scene with the cops. He did say he would never do that again.
