We all know that pre-election polls are primarily conducted for the benefit of the media and heavily weighted toward the Democratic voter... especially this year where everyone believes that the Democratic turnout will exceed the Republican turnout by a factor of 3 to 2.
There is a huge human factor in play during this election: how a voter responds to an exit poll conducted in ear-shot of bystanders will not necessarily be indicative of how they actually voted. There has been much speculation that people publicly supported Obama because they were afraid of being classified as a racist, but would actually pull the lever for McCain when push came to shove. Look at what happened to Joe The Plumber for asking a simply, legitimate question.
I agree with you on one thing: that if John McCain wins, people will take to the streets, rioting and screaming bloody murder -- because the Democrats are so freakin' arrogant, it's inconceivable they could lose.
