Judy Rightmyer: In this area (not NYC) combined state and federal taxes on a pack of cigarettes, is $6.35, not counting local sales tax.
I vividly remember that strike, and rolling my eyes as one of the poor downtrodden controllers whined to a reporter about not being able to make ends meet, while leaning against a Mercedes wagon, and holding a toddler wearing a tshirt that matched his own, that read "ARUBA!"
They were making $100k in 1981 dollars!
That's like $266k right now.

I guarantee you that is one of the worst things he could have done in court.
That's right up there with wearing a tshirt that reads "WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE ME?", or.
"JUDGES HAVE SEX WITH GOATS!"
That profoundly stupid act destroyed any chances of him ever being released on parole.
I'm OK with that.
