John E.N. Hume III is The Gazette's publisher emeritus as well as vice president of its board of directors.
He first worked for The Gazette in the pressroom in 1958. After graduating from Albany Academy and then the University of Virginia, he served in the Schenectady Air National Guard.
He began his work at The Gazette in 1966 in engravings. Over the years, he worked as a photographer, a re-write man, an assistant state editor and an assistant city editor. In 1974, he became managing editor, and in 1986, he became editor. Four years later, he became publisher.
He retired as publisher in July 2013 but remains active as publisher emeritus and a board member.
