WELL I GATHER FROM THE ABOVE POLL THE IQ'S OF GAZETTE READERS IS WAY BELOW AVERAGE AND THEIR LEANINGS ARE TO THE 'RIGHT'... HONESTLY MAKES ME NOT WANT TO BE PART OF THE GAZETTE READERSHIP.
40 BILLION, yes BILLION, acres of offshore territory is already available to the oil companies and they are choosing not to drill and pump. Why? Because they like gas prices the way they are now. This is simply an effort by the Republicans, who are in the pockets of big oil, to extend the property available to the oil companies. This will not affect gas prices one bit, it will just make the oilmen richer. Some people are just too lazy, or stupid, to find out the facts and read between the lines.
Between " goddess" and "superdave 1919" with there profane atitude and ignorance in how they address each other, I think I choose the third comment as more decent and factual as to the true account of what is happening. The government wants you to use oil only if they are making a hefty profit; as to cars mpgs they don't want good gas mileage, but only clean emmissions, you don't want them losing there taxes do you," they don't" ! It is no more the government for the people but only for themselves, to see how much they can squeeze you with out breaking you, when you cry they ease up with a stimulus check so you can buy your beer, and ciggies. America better smarten up.
While I never favor any increases on our already onerous tax burdens, I believe that a surcharge needs to be placed upon people who are not intelligent enough to understand what is in our national interest. So for the people who continue to parrot the socialist agenda regarding energy use, I suggest a "Useful Idiot Propagandist" surcharge in the amount of 50% of their federal entitlements or the money that mummsy and pater are giving them to live on.
Wow! Why has the Gazette allowed such a personal attack by superdave1919 to be posted here. I'm sure that his diatribe filled with such invective and personal insults would not be published in the print edition. The problem with sites like this that invite readers to express their opinions is that it makes the ignorant equal with the well informed and thoughtful. Obviously one can discern who is who after reading the above postings. If one is unable to give a well thought out commentary, absent of personal attacks, perhaps a couple of courses in manners and how to write coherently is needed.
Off the coast of Santa Barbara there is an oil slick that was reported even back in the 1500's when Cortez sailed the blue seas. This is seepage from the tremendous oil fields off the coast. It is such a problem, that the beaches need to be cleaned when this comes to land. So, if we drill there we solve two problems, we get oil and we get a clean environment. Now everyone wins!
New drilling only solves some of the current problem. Manipulation of the oil market has to stop and the American dollar has to be strengthened. You can open the entire North American continent to drilling, but not taking care of these other two situations will negate anything else.

See, just one person can make a difference - the IQ has taken a great leap up since you left.
"40 BILLION, yes BILLION, acres of offshore territory is already available to the oil companies and they are choosing not to drill and pump. Why?"
Because you forgot to include $PEND BILLION$ to EXPLORE those 40 billion deep offshore acres to locate the oil before they can drill and pump. That's something that it not necessary on the continental shelf or in ANWAR, because they already know exactly where the oil is.
