SCHENECTADY The Daily Gazette will increase its home delivery prices Oct. 12, the company announced Friday.
The increases, the first in 12 years, will raise the cost of a 7-day subscription by 50 cents to $4. The 3-day weekend home delivery rate will rise from $1.50 to $2.
There will be no increase in the paper’s newsstand price, which will remain 50 cents Mondays through Saturdays and $2 Sundays.
Assistant General Manager James Grandy said the price hike was due to rising costs, especially increases in newsprint and fuel prices.
“Unfortunately, these increases make it necessary for us to raise the price of home delivery,” Grandy said. A portion of the cost increase will be shared with the carriers who deliver the paper.
In addition to rising costs, newspapers nationwide are dealing with reductions in advertising revenue.
The Gazette has taken other cost-saving steps this month, including the layoff of eight employees, an overhaul of the weekday stock listings and the elimination of its TV Week supplement.

No more Weekly TV Guide in the Sunday Gazette! That may be good for the Gazette, but it certainly isn't good for the Senior Citizens, who have been your faithful readers all these years. They rely on the Sunday TV Guide for their television viewing. The TV Guide, and coupons to save a few cents on groceries and other household items in a tough economy, are important to Senior Citizens, and Senior Citizens should be as important to you!

Raising the price AND eliminating the TV supplement is an insult to the readership, especially to seniors. You should be ashamed!! The Times Union still offers a TV supplement and is now cheaper!
