Christians and Jews
Thursday, April 17, 2008

Why do I rag on Christians but not on Jews? The question was raised by a letter-writer, and I think it’s a fair one.

For my full answer, please see my column in today’s (Thursday’s) Daily Gazette.

In brief, it’s because Christians are on a roll in this country and Jews are not. And it’s Christians who are trying to cram their everloving faith down our throats. (When I say Christians I mean the fundamentalist evangelical variety who have appropriated that name for themselves to the exclusion of more restrained believers.)

I use the label with a touch of irony, or try to.

I think it’s pretty funny that Christian fundamentalists feel free to trumpet their faith as some marvelous thing that the rest of us should adopt lest we burn in hell for eternity, but if some harmless observer like me pokes a little friendly fun they cry foul and ask, how dare I “bash” them? Why don’t I bash Jews?

Because Jews aren’t beating their breasts in public, not in this country anyway. They don’t come knocking at my door asking me if I’ve been saved. And they’re not trying to insinuate their hokum into every corner of our public life.

Right on, Carl!

Believe what you want, just don't try to affect my life.

The Kool-Aid Christians just don't get it that this is not and never was a "Christian Nation".

BTW, absolutely no offense meant to those Christians who actually live by the teachings of Jesus.

Carl and timrinaldo:
Thank you! It is reassuring to find I am not the only one with these kinds of thoughts. I get so tired of extremists of any religious type claiming to know what god wants and trying to convince me of their absolute righteousness.

We have "Christian" neighbors. This morning their landscaping workers woke us up before 7AM and it's Saturday. When we called up to ask that they postpone the noise for a few hours they yelled at US! But they go to church religiously so they must be more Christian than I am, right?
If only all of those who professed to be Christians followed the actual teachings of Jesus we'd be in good shape. After all, he did have some good ideas.

I especially wish they'd follow Jesus's admonition to "pray in your closet". LOL!

Re: the Saturday landscaping - Maybe you need to do some heavy yard work starting about 7 Am on "the Lord's Day"
