“I can safely say I have not seen anything like it in my years of observing state and local government – a politician so meteorically successful as Eliot Spitzer brought so hellishly low, so fast.”
So I begin my column in tomorrow’s (Thursday’s) Gazette, in which I ruminate on the hidden side of Spitzer’s personality, kept concealed from the rest of us, and probably even from his family, these many years.
To me it is a source not so much of disappointment or anger as of wonder. How could the guy have been the Ethical Avenger in public so convincingly while skulking in the shadows in his private life?

I'm a fan of your column. Regarding Elliot Spitzer's debacle, a quote/saying comes to mind: "The pen is mightier than the sword" and maybe we should add and "The penis is mightier than reason". It's a darn shame some men are ruled and ruined by it.

As you said in your column about Spitzer, never underestimate the human heart. I'm baffled that a man with such power, and credentials, would do something as destructive as get involved with a prostitute, (and money launder?). Didn't he know the law? Wasn't he at one time a prosecutor? His actions just brings up more questions about his intelligence. It's one thing to be a regular Joe paying for a call girl but he was not a regular Joe. This man came from good schools, was at least partially responsible for the demise of the Gambino family operation, held everyone else accountable as Attorney General. Now, at the seat of NY government, we learn that he's only human and as destructable as the rest of us.
The human heart may or may not have anything to do with his actions that lead to his demise but his mind sure does. Maybe it's time for his heart to play a bigger role in his life now that he'll have some time to think about what comes next.

Did you catch John McCains' quote from Iraq the other day about the U. S. and its allies being " on the precipice of victory"?
